We will begin reading The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe on 10/23. A copy of the story can be found under "Reading Material."
10/22 Homework -Write a one-paragraph story from the first person point-of-view. Re-write the same story from the third person point-of-view. Below is an example that you can follow:
1st Person- I went to the store and purchased a dress. I loved the dress, but didn’t have time to try it on. When I got home I discovered it was torn. I returned it the next day.
3rd Person – Mrs. Dunn went to the store to purchase a dress. She picked one and bought it without trying it on. When she got home, she discovered it was torn. She returned it the next day.

Beginning Tuesday, October 13, 2015, we will begin reading "Bonne Annee." A copy of the story is under "Reading Material." I encourage all students to read the personal essay on their own. It will help you with your project!
Due Date: Tuesday, October 20th - Project: Research Haiti’s history from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. Create a poster that describes Papa Doc Duvalier and his son. Include information on how their policies affected the people of Haiti and events that caused people to leave Haiti. You will be graded on the accuracy of the information, neatness, and creativity. You poster board can be any color.

9/21: “My Favorite Chaperone” Choice Board - This following activity is being done in class. It is worth 100 points!
Directions: Complete any 3 assignments on the board below.

Compose a rap/poem about the plot of the story. You must include the names of the plot elements and corresponding events in “My Favorite Chaperone.” |
Make a comic strip about the plot of the story. You must include pictures and character dialogue. |
Research the history of Kazakhstan. Make a list of 10 facts you found out about the country where Maya’s family lived before coming to America. |

Select 1 event from “My Favorite Chaperone” and turn it into a play! Write the script with dialogue. Select a couple of your friends to act it out with you for the class. |

Create an Advice Column for a newspaper. Write a letter for Maya, Nurzhan, Mama, and Papa to the advice column. Their letters should include all the problems they have experienced in the story. Write letters back to the characters giving them advice on how to eliminate the problems. |

Re-tell “My Favorite Chaperone” from Maya’s father’s point of view. Only re-tell the scenes where he was present or would have been thinking about his kids. Limit of 1-2 pages, front only. |

Pretend you are a film director. You have to turn “My Favorite Chaperone” into a movie. Identify famous actors/actresses to play each character’s part. Under each name, explain why the actor/actress you selected would be perfect. |
