Independent Reading Novel Project

Directions: Each quarter, you are to choose one of the following projects to complete for your independent reading novel.  You are to choose DIFFERENT project each quarter! Remember, you have the entire quarter to start and finish your novel as well as complete the project. Each option includes a visual AND a written portion. Please be sure to complete the entire assignment and follow the rubric guidelines.

Choose three events in the book.  Tell about the events by writing diary entries from one character’s perspective.


Include 3 pictures to go with each diary entry to represent that event

Choose an important event in the book.  Create a comic strip that conveys what happened.


Comics must be at least 8 strips long and include 1-2 sentences as captions to describe the event.

Make a timeline to show the sequence of at least ten events in the book.


Include at least 5 visuals to represent events on your timeline

Grading requirements


Each diary entry is on a separate piece of paper with its visual


Each diary entry is written in the perspective of the SAME character, and is in first period (uses “I”)


Each diary entry is at least 8 sentences and is proofread for spelling, grammar, and punctuation


Diary entries explain an entire event that happened in the story in detail, and give the chosen character’s thoughts and feelings on what happened


Visuals are neat and show creativity (not just printed on the internet).

Grading Requirements


Comics are neat, and show creativity and effort.


Each comic includes a 1-2 sentence summary caption written neatly or types. Captions should be proofread for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.


Comic should cover the entire event from the book, including who, what, when, where, why. If a student needs to go over 8 strips to do this then that is ok.


Comic should include the title and author of the book, as well as the pages being covered.

Grading Requirements


10 events are in order and are from various placed in the novel


Events should be written complete sentences, and described in detail.


Visuals show creativity and are neat, and represent the events from the story.


Student creates a timeline, and does not simply list evens on a piece of paper.

Create a collage to represent either the main character from your book or to represent the entire book. Collages must include 10 pictures.


On a separate piece of paper summarize what you put on your collage and why you chose these pictures.

Write a poem at least 15 lines long to describe a character or event from the novel.


Include a visual to support your poem.

Find two examples of external conflict and one example of internal conflict.


On a poster board create 3 panels and make a visual for each conflict. You must also include a paragraph to explain each conflict.

Grading Requirements


Collages must include the name of the character being represented (if choosing a character) and the title and author of the book


Collages must include a minimum of 10 visuals. Visuals must show an understand of the book/character, and be creative and neat.


Visuals must be explained on a separate piece of paper, and explanations must be in complete sentences and proofread of errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.


Grading Requirements


Poem does not need to rhyme, but it should be written like a poem (not paragraph form) and 15 lines


Poem should include a title.


Poem must be about a character or major event from the novel. On the back write the characters name and/or the pages being used for the poem.


Visual must show neatness and creativity and represent what is written in the poem.

Poster includes two examples of external conflict and one example of internal conflict.


You may use more than one visual to represent each conflict if it is needed! Visuals must show neatness and creativity.


For each conflict you must have a written portion explaining who was involved, what caused the conflict, and how (if) it was resolved.


Writing must be proofread for errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Grading Requirements


Project must include at least 1 visual representation that is neat and creative, DO NOT JUST PRINT ONE PICTURE AND CONSIDER IT A VISUAL.


Project must include at least 2 written paragraphs, 7 sentences minimum.


Writing must be neat and proofread for errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
