Discuss: Spanish speaking countries represented in USA. Introduction to Latino culture (watch short video). Learn about the origin of Salsa dancing. Listen to some Salsa music and try to identify instruments.

    

SWBAT: Identify with the Latino culture and start to understand the connection between their culture and the dance movement. Students will complete crossword puzzle from vocabulary words.

(Group collages- each class student groups will work on culture collages to be used as a back drop).

Watch some excerpts from the movie, “ Dance with Me” and   Dancing with the stars. Discuss some present day Latino entertainers. Students will start to move to the music.

SWBAT: recognize the different styles of Salsa dancing. Students will see that differences and similarities between formal and informal dance.

Students will begin to learn a basic Salsa step.

Health Benefits to dancing Salsa.  Salsa dancing is done with your whole body. Every step is done with hands, arms, shoulders, hip, legs                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               and feet. This lesson we will Combine                                                           the basic step (front and back) with a side/side and half- turn step.

SWBAT:  Understand that Salsa Dancing is a physical work out and helps to keep you in shape. The music for Salsa is fast and the steps are executed quickily. Complete Body worksheet and explain what parts of the body it helps.  Start to analyze the difference and similarities   between your culture and the Latino culture.(Venn Diagram)

 Clothes are a big part of Salsa dancing. They are colorful and because of the movements must be very comfortable.  Discuss what to wear for the performance. Look at pictures of costumes that are worn when you dance. Partners will begin to dance together today.

 

Choreographing the routine for end of the year performance. Routine will be done in groups. Students will have a chance to help putting the routine together. Girls will do washing machine step and boys will do boys group step.

                                   

 

                                     Tasks       

Costumes for performance will be brought in to ensure that they are appropriate. Steps are cleaned up and any dance problem fixed. Review whole routine for mistakes.

 

 

Week of performances-Practice and decorate with group projects of collages (Latino culture- people, food ,  countries ,fashions ,dance).

SWBAT: Know that clothes play a major role in dancing Salsa. If the clothes are not stretchy material it will be hard to execute the movements. Homework: Design your own Salsa costume. Dance in partners today.

 

 

SWBAT: Help choreograph their dance routine for the end of the year project. Practice partner under arm turn while boys and girl group practice steps.

SWBAT: Accurately execute the Salsa movements for the routine. Continue to practice steps to enhance dance skills.
